For educators, therapists and supporting practitioners

Autism course for practitioners, educators and therapists

An Autistic-led framework for neurodivergence-competent practice, from two Autistic educators and authors.

Re-Storying Autism asks a different first question. Not “how do we stop this behaviour?” but “what is this person communicating, and what helps them feel safe?” It is written for the settings Autistic people move through every day, including education, healthcare, care and work, and follows our course book, Re-Storying Autism: A Framework For Autistic People, Carers and Supporting Practitioners.

“When understanding replaces judgement, relationships begin to change.”Helen Edgar and David Gray-Hammond

Helen spent over twenty years teaching in Early Years and Primary SEND settings, and David works in neurodiversity consultancy and research. The course is endorsed by Kelly Mahler, OTD, author of The Interoception Curriculum. Want to use the course with your clients? The Professional Licence gives as many clients as you work with their own access, for £499.99 a year. For a team or a whole setting, ask us.

What practitioners take from the course

Understanding before intervention

Make sense of distress, meltdowns, shutdowns and withdrawal through monotropism (Murray et al., 2005), the double empathy problem (Milton, 2012) and the eight-sense world, before reaching for a strategy.

Sensory-competent environments

Adapt classrooms, clinics and services around sensory needs, interoception and predictability, so Autistic people can feel safe enough to learn and connect.

Burnout and trauma awareness

Recognise Autistic burnout early (Raymaker et al., 2020) and understand trauma as sensory, relational and cumulative, with boundaries that protect rather than punish.

Identity-affirming language

Use identity-first language, move away from functioning labels, and support self-trust and belonging rather than compliance.

Reflective practice

Reflective questions for your own practice, plus “Empowering My Autistic Self” pages to use with the children, young people and adults you support.

Learning from Autistic community

Ground your practice in Autistic culture and collective knowledge, and co-create support with the people it is for.

Common questions

Who is the Re-Storying Autism course for?

It is for Autistic people (including late-identified and self-identified adults) who want language and understanding for their own experience; for parents, carers and family members who want to support an Autistic loved one in a way that works with them; and for practitioners, such as teachers, SENCOs, therapists, OTs and social prescribers, who support Autistic people in their work. It follows our course book, Re-Storying Autism: A Framework For Autistic People, Carers and Supporting Practitioners. It is not for anyone looking to change, cure or normalise an Autistic person.

Can I share my login or use the course with colleagues?

Each purchase is for one learner. If you are a therapist, educator, social prescriber or other practitioner, the Professional Licence (£499.99 a year) lets you give as many clients as you work with their own access to the whole Ultimate Course Bundle. For a team, school or service, email us.

Is there a certificate?

Yes. When you have marked every lesson complete (and filled in or skipped the short, optional closing survey), you can create a personal certificate of completion with your name and print it or save it as a PDF.

Is this medical or therapeutic advice?

No. The course offers education, understanding and reflection, based on Autistic-led theory and lived experience. It does not replace advice from your own health, education or care professionals.
